I learned from Garrison Keillor this morning (I do enjoy my morning "Writer's Almanac" podcast") that today is the 50th anniversary of The Day the Music Died.

today itunes began to play "warning" by green day, and i realized that the bass line is almost exactly the same as that of "picture book" by the kinks (the song in the hp commericials, if you're not familiar). i suppose its not exactly the same, since that would be plagiarism-- though i wouldnt have been surprised if the kinks were cool with green day sampling them. in fact, that might actually be cooler than just having similar lines. i mean, its not surprising i suppose for a band like green day to be influenced by a band like the kinks.
