So I'm tied for Spock, Dr. Crusher and Geordi, which I can live with. Makes sense, even. And I suppose the redshirt thing does too, I just don't like it :p

Seems the latest meme-in-which-I-have-not-yet-participated is "four things you consider overrated."

1. Calamari

2. the color pink

3. Wine (maybe I'll change my mind once my tastebuds start dying, but I can't think of too many situations in which I wouldn't rather have a nice beer, or even a martini)

4. miRNA "seed region" pairing (okay, very specific and personal vendetta-- it's just that a while back, someone observed that nucleotides 2-8 of miRNAs usually have perfect pairing to their targets. So people started making that a requirement for their target-prediction algorithms, then got all excited that all the results that tested positive had perfect seed pairing! GAH. It doesn't help that the seed region pairing to BOTH let-7 target sites in lin-41 (the second miRNA:target interaction ever identified and still one of the best characterized yes I am a fangirl) are imperfect! DOUBLE GAH.)

And because that one was too specific, bonus 5: Tom Hanks

This is hard, since there are lots of things that I don't like that it's almost trendy to dislike (American Idol), stuff that goes beyond overratedness and straight into loathed territory (Judd Apatow), general stuff ("being considered normal"), and stuff that I understand how other people could like but it's just not for me (The Shawshank Redemption, Lord of the Rings) so I wouldn't say they're overrated as such.

H/T Shapely Prose via Her Dread Majesty

ETA: You know, in fairness I feel like I ought to do four things that I like more than the general populace (not counting my research)

1. Matrix: Reloaded

2. High-alcohol-content beer (yes, I actually like the taste)

3. Non-video-game RPGs

4. Interesting accents and voices (Sal should not have messed with me when I said I thought the computers in the movie last night had the authentic Star Trek Majel Barrett Roddenberry voice!)

i really enjoyed ken jennings's recent post on everyday use of movie lines. seeing as how roughly 50% of what i say around my friends isnt necessarily originally mine, this entry struck a bit of a chord with me. so i thought i'd post my list, and see if you people are freaks of the same magnitude as i am.

1. "hut hut hut hut hut hut hut hut..." - the swat team at the end of blues brothers. i can remember this being used by my family way back in the summer of 1989 during our first, and biggest, road trip. used mostly at rest stops to keep us moving quickly, as well as in the mornings when dad got us up absurdly early.

2. "excuse me, pardon me, pardon me, excuse me..." - boon, animal house. useful constantly, especially in our tiny apartment or my cramped lab space, repeated the entire time it takes you to get around the object/person in your way.

3. "you keep using that word. i do not think it means what you think it means." - inigo montoya, princess bride. useful constantly, especially living with sal and working with several non-native english speakers.

4. "could be worse. could be raining." - igor, young frankenstein. useful when it probably couldn't be worse.

5. "you'd like to think that, wouldn't you?!" vizzini, princess bride useful when competence is questioned.

6. "one of us! one of us!" - the circus freaks in the incredibly nonsensical final episode of the clerks animated series, said in a very high pitched voice and followed by high-pitched giggling. useful when pointing out that someone is in denial about a trait you share (for us, almost always dorkery)

7. "and there was much rejoicing." "yay." holy grail. self explanatory.

and of course:

8. "who's this 'we,' white man?"

did i leave out any good ones? are there lines youall use constantly?

okay, a couple weeks ago i linked to the video for the new weird al song white and nerdy. and since sal and i got bored that night (and then subsequently very busy), we wrote up a white-and-nerdy themed dork test (based on both lyrics and the video) and then forgot to post it till now. but here we go, my first attempt at writing a meme ;)

holy cow i'm white and nerdy! )
